What homes and driveways need from bollards

For homeowners, a security post on the driveway is a simple, visible way to stop a car being driven away, to keep other people from parking on your drive, and to protect a garage door or front wall from vehicles turning in the road.

Telescopic posts drop flush into the ground when you want to drive out; fold-down posts hinge flat; removable posts lift out of a socket. We help you choose by how often you use the drive, the surface (block paving, tarmac, resin or gravel) and whether you want to lock the car in or keep others out.

Typical requirements

  • Stopping car theft from the drive
  • Keeping others off a private drive
  • Protecting garage doors and walls
  • Neat installation into block paving or resin
  • Matching keys for multiple posts
  • Removal of old posts

Things to check

  • Check for drainage, cables and pipes under the drive before digging — telescopic posts need a deep hole.
  • Telescopic and removable posts need occasional cleaning and lubrication of the lock and socket.
  • If your drive crosses a public footway, posts must stay on your side of the boundary.
  • Insurers sometimes ask what security a vehicle has; keep the post's details for your policy.

Homes and driveways: questions

Which driveway post is easiest to use every day?

A telescopic post with a gas-assisted lift, or a semi-automatic post, takes the least effort. Fold-down posts are quick but you bend to unlock them; removable posts need lifting out and storing.

Will it damage my block paving?

We lift the blocks around the post position, dig and set the post, then relay the original blocks neatly around it. Resin and tarmac are cut and patched to match as closely as possible.

How long does fitting take?

Usually a few hours per post, with the concrete left to cure before the post is used. Telescopic posts take longer because of the depth of the hole and drainage.
