Bollards for public realm and council schemes
Installation of specified street furniture, pedestrianisation and protective security schemes for councils and their contractors.
Computer-generated imageWhat public realm and councils need from bollards
Council and public realm schemes usually arrive with a specification: the bollard type, the finish, the setting-out drawing and the traffic management. Our role is to install it properly — accurate setting-out, foundations to the manufacturer's details, and reinstatement that matches the surrounding paving.
We work as an installer for highway authorities and as a subcontractor to their main contractors, under their permits and traffic management where that is the arrangement. For protective security schemes, we install rated products to their tested foundation designs and work with the scheme's security adviser.
Typical requirements
- Pedestrianisation and town-centre schemes
- Heritage and cast iron street furniture
- Protective security bollards at crowded places
- Installation to council specifications and drawings
- Reinstatement of natural stone and block paving
- Replacement after collisions
Things to check
- Street works need permits and notices; who holds them depends on the contract.
- Natural stone paving needs careful lifting and relaying; allow for matching materials.
- Shallow-mount systems exist for streets crowded with buried services.
- Inclusive Mobility guidance on spacing, height and visibility applies to public footways.
Public realm and councils: questions
Do you install to our drawings and specification?
Yes. We install the specified product to the setting-out drawing and the manufacturer's foundation details, and flag anything on site that does not match the drawing before we dig.
Can you work under our traffic management?
Yes, or we can arrange traffic management ourselves. We agree who holds the street works permit before work starts.
Do you supply heritage castings?
We supply and fit cast iron bollards in standard heritage patterns, and can match an existing local pattern where a foundry still makes it.
