What schools and colleges need from bollards

School sites have a sharp daily peak: hundreds of children arriving on foot, by bike and by car within half an hour. Bollards separate those streams, stop parents driving onto pedestrian areas, and protect gates, play areas and entrances from vehicles.

We plan around term dates, doing noisy work and concrete pours in holidays or at weekends where possible. Removable or telescopic posts are popular on routes that occasionally need to open for maintenance vehicles, deliveries or emergencies.

Typical requirements

  • Pedestrian zones at gates and drop-off points
  • Removable posts on maintenance and emergency routes
  • Protecting play areas and entrances
  • Timber or coloured posts in softer settings
  • Holiday and weekend working
  • Replacing damaged or loose posts

Things to check

  • Emergency vehicle access must stay available — removable posts with a key held by the site team are usual.
  • Spacing should let wheelchairs and buggies through but stop cars: guidance sets a maximum clear gap of 1.2 m where posts act as a vehicle barrier.
  • Check with the local authority whether the frontage is highway before planning posts by the gate.
  • Bright visibility bands help younger children and drivers see posts.

Schools and colleges: questions

Can you work during term time?

Yes, with the site fenced off and work kept away from pupil routes. Most schools prefer holidays or weekends for drilling and concrete, and we plan around that.

Which posts are safest around children?

Smooth, rounded heads with no sharp edges and clear visibility bands. Timber and dome-topped steel both work; avoid chains strung between posts on busy routes.

Who holds the keys for removable posts?

The site team, normally. We supply keys and can match existing key types where the school already has removable posts.
