Rules for lighting bollards in England
Bollards on adopted highway are a matter for the highway authority under the Highways Act 1980, so they need its written agreement. On private land the owner's agreement is what matters; listed buildings and conservation areas need a word with the planning team first. Accessibility guidance asks for posts at least 1,000 mm high with contrasting tops and no chains between them.

How installation works
Survey and lighting layout
A free site survey looks at the routes to be lit, where power can come from, surfaces and buried services. Bollard spacing is set from the product's light data, and you receive a fixed written quote.
Dig cable routes
Trenches are dug between bollard positions and the supply point, avoiding existing services, with cable or duct laid at a suitable depth and warning tape above.
Set the bases
Anchor cages or foundations are cast at each position with the cable entry in the right place, set level so each bollard stands plumb.
Reinstate
Trenches are backfilled and surfaces made good, whether paving, tarmac, gravel or turf.
Lighting bollards in Suffolk: FAQs
Do you cover all of Suffolk for lighting bollards?
Yes — including Ipswich, Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill, Felixstowe, Sudbury, Stowmarket and Newmarket. Enter your postcode in the price calculator to confirm.
How much do lighting bollards cost in Suffolk?
In Suffolk, typically £355–£1,245 per bollard, installed with a qualified electrician (supply run extra), plus VAT (£425–£1,495 including VAT for homeowners), with a minimum job of £865 plus VAT, using our East of England guide prices. The fixed figure comes in writing after we've seen the site.
Who do I ask about bollards on public land in Suffolk?
For local roads, Suffolk County Council; National Highways covers motorways and trunk roads. Bollards on adopted highway need the highway authority's written agreement.
How far apart should lighting bollards be?
That depends on the light output, beam pattern and how evenly the path needs to be lit. Spacing is worked out from the product's light data rather than a fixed distance. Too far apart leaves dark patches between pools of light.
Do lighting bollards need an electrician to install?
Yes, mains lighting bollards must be connected by a qualified electrician, who tests and certifies the circuit. We arrange that as part of the job. Solar bollards avoid mains work but provide less light.
