Rules for telescopic bollards in Northern Ireland

Bollards on public footways and roads need DfI Roads consent under the Roads (NI) Order 1993; councils deal with planning. On private land the owner's agreement is what matters; listed buildings and conservation areas need a word with the planning team first. Accessibility guidance asks for posts at least 1,000 mm high with contrasting tops and no chains between them.

How installation works

Check depth and drainage

The free site survey checks how far down we can dig, where services run under the drive and how the ground drains. If water will stand, a drain connection is priced into the fixed written quote.

Cut and excavate

The surface is cut neatly and the hole dug to the cassette's full depth plus a drainage layer, with care near any service that crosses the drive.

Form the drainage

A gravel soakaway is placed beneath the cassette, or a pipe is laid to a surface water drain or new soakaway.

Reinstate and test

The surface is made good to match. The post is raised, locked, lowered and locked several times to confirm smooth operation, and keys are handed over.

How much do telescopic bollards cost in Ards and North Down?

In Ards and North Down, typically £335–£1,195 per bollard with cassette, supplied and installed, plus VAT (£395–£1,445 including VAT for homeowners), with a minimum job of £625 plus VAT, using our Northern Ireland guide prices. The fixed figure comes in writing after we've seen the site.

Who do I ask about bollards on public land in Ards and North Down?

DfI Roads (the Department for Infrastructure) is the roads authority for public roads and footways throughout Northern Ireland; councils handle planning.

Will a telescopic bollard stop my car being stolen?

It adds a physical barrier that a thief has to defeat before driving away, which slows them down and makes the car a less attractive target. It is one layer of protection, not a complete answer to keyless car theft.

Why does my telescopic bollard fill with water?

Because the cassette is not draining, either through a blocked base, clay ground or no drainage provision at installation. Standing water rusts the post and can freeze it in place. Fixing the drainage usually solves the problem.
