Rules for driveway security posts in England

Bollards on adopted highway are a matter for the highway authority under the Highways Act 1980, so they need its written agreement. On private land the owner's agreement is what matters; listed buildings and conservation areas need a word with the planning team first. Accessibility guidance asks for posts at least 1,000 mm high with contrasting tops and no chains between them.

How installation works

Free home survey

We look at your drive, how and where you park, the surface and what might be under it, such as the water pipe or a gas service. You receive a fixed written quote with the post type and position marked.

Mark the position

The position is marked with the car in place, so we can check it blocks the car and that you can still open doors and walk past.

Fit the post

Telescopic cassettes and removable sockets are set flush in concrete with drainage beneath. Fold-down posts are anchored to concrete or a small new pad.

Make good and show you

The surface is reinstated and cleaned. We show you how to lock, lower and raise the post and hand over the keys.

Driveway security posts in London: FAQs

Do you cover all of London for driveway security posts?

Yes — including City of London, Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Camden and Croydon. Enter your postcode in the price calculator to confirm.

How much do driveway security posts cost in London?

In London, typically £445–£975 per post, supplied and installed, including VAT, with a minimum job of £445 plus VAT, using our London guide prices. The fixed figure comes in writing after we've seen the site.

Who do I ask about bollards on public land in London?

For local roads, Barking and Dagenham Council, Barnet Council, Bexley Council, Brent Council, Bromley Council, Camden Council, Croydon Council, Ealing Council, Enfield Council, Greenwich Council, Hackney Council, Hammersmith and Fulham Council, Haringey Council, Harrow Council, Havering Council, Hillingdon Council, Hounslow Council, Islington Council, Kensington and Chelsea Council, Kingston upon Thames Council, Lambeth Council, Lewisham Council, Merton Council, Newham Council, Redbridge Council, Richmond upon Thames Council, Southwark Council, Sutton Council, Tower Hamlets Council, Waltham Forest Council, Wandsworth Council, Westminster City Council and the City of London Corporation; National Highways covers motorways and trunk roads. Bollards on adopted highway need the highway authority's written agreement.

Where should a driveway security post go?

Close enough in front of the car, or between it and the road, that the car cannot be driven round it. We mark the position with your car in place during the survey. Sloping drives and wide frontages may change the obvious spot.

Which type of post is right for my driveway?

Telescopic if you want a flush, tidy finish and will use it daily, provided the ground can be dug and drained. Fold-down if digging is not possible or the drive is concrete. Removable if the post will only be used occasionally and you have somewhere to store it.
